History of the Chateau de la Guillonniere

The origin of the Chateau de la Guillonniere dates back for centuries. Located near the Roman Road from Poitiers to Limoges, it is thought to have been built on ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa.

The castle was already mentioned in records dating from 1534. The Seigneury of La Guillonniere was dependent on the Barony of Mortemer.

King François I came to hunt in the woods of La Guillonniere.

He offered Diane de Poitiers a hunting lodge (which unfortunately does not exist anymore) somewhere in this forest. Diane was considered as the most attractive French woman of the 16th century. The greatest artists of the French Renaissance, sculptors and painters represented her as the goddess Diana the Huntress.

The famous French writer, Victor Hugo, romantically relates that Diane de Poitiers was the mistress of two kings: François I, the father, and Henri II, the son. She was 20 years older than King Henri II, but such a beautiful woman that she was the "favorite" and successful rival of young Queen Catherine de Medicis.

In 1547 the King gave Diane a sumptuous gift: Le Chateau de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley. This strange "matrimonial triangle" of French history lasted until the death of the King.

One century later, the Lord of La Guillonniere was Jacques Audebert, Mayor of Poitiers. In the 18th century, the Lord of La Guillonniere was Michel Mathias Antoine Pays-Mellier who was Treasurer of France.

In the 19th century the families Nicolas des Fossettes, De La Riniere and Collin de l'Hortet were the owners of La Guillonniere. Many members of these families were natives of the French region of Berry near Nohant where the romantic writer, George Sand, had her house. She was one of the first women to fight for women's liberation.

George Sand came and stayed a few weeks with her "dear friends of la Guillonniere." This was in 1839. She had returned from a journey to the Balearic Islands with her lover, the famous composer Frederic Chopin. They were looking for a romantic honeymoon away from Paris and the European capital cities. But their stay in Majorca was troubled and turbulent. The weather was terrible, Chopin was sick and in a bad mood not finding a good enough piano on the island.

When you rent the castle you can sleep in George Sand's bedroom.

Back in France, George Sand needed to rest in a quiet place. She liked the peace and quite at la Guillonniere's and the lovely view from her bedroom window. We don't know whether Chopin was with her or not; but we dream he sat at the piano in the lounge and played for her.

At the end of the turn of this century, La Guillonniere was mainly a huge and extremely modern farm. During the Second World War the Chateau de la Guillonniere experienced very dark days and was a headquarters for German officers.

Almost uninhabited since the end of the World War II, the Chateau de la Guillonniere has come alive again thanks to the current owners who have spent years to entirely restore it and now open it to tourists from around the world.
