The Mona Lisa portrait known as La Gioconda was taken to France by Leonardo and was acquired by the king Francois I. With a lasting effect on Italian art, this portrait stood for an ideal. The famous smile that gives her life is a feature of many of Leonardo da Vinci ' s portraits. Several scholars have concluded that the portrait was worked on over a long period, starting around 1505-1506 in Florence, and it is said Leonardo was still working on the lady's smile when staying in Clos Luce trying to reach perfection .
The Virgin and Child with St. Anne was painted in Milan around 1510, and was the result of much creative deliberation, as drawings indicate . Leonardo da Vinci never quite finished this panel, improving it without end and keeping it with him until he died in the Clos Luce.
